Makara

Makara is not of this earth. She belongs to the universe.

She sprints from galaxy to galaxy defending benevolent gods and goddesses from evil to maintain balance in the universe. She is helpful, protective and she will shield you from wrongdoers.

The rest of the Universe is at peace so Makara has time for a visit to Earth. She is here only for a little while and she is not happy with what she sees. There is a lot of cleaning up to do. This place is a real mess.
Makara is an intergalactic creature, and on earth she can move easily between land and water. Some say she is part reptile, part mammal. Others think she may be some kind of sea dragon.

She has many strengths and invokes the the right powers for the challenge at hand. You want her to be on your side.

La Guererra

Once a young girl, La Guererra was shaped by a county being torn apart by the bombs and blasts of an enemy military that would not cease until there was nothing left to fight for.

Over the many painful years during which her brothers returned home from battle only to be buried, she collected an arsenal of means to challenge the ideals of such a senseless and inexorable quest for power that only resulted in blood shed.

We are all in a fight for something. Constant battles for which there is no end. Fighting for peace is a conflict in itself, but in her struggle she realized the only words her adversaries speak and the only thing they perceive is war.

She refuses to fight on their level. Although she is angry, she does not want blood on her hands, so she takes to the ring. A place where she can fight and her message can be heard through the booming battle cry of the crowds.

LA GRANADA

La Granada is proof that the quietest ones may turn out to be the most lethal fighters.

Introverted and secretive as a child growing up in Atlanta, she loved nothing more than reading, writing and painting. While she liked playing outside with the other children, she much preferred the magical worlds of books, arts and music. (Or, avoiding them in trees.)

In her creations, she was in charge. Because of her mysterious creative talents, she was taunted by the others in school, beaten up behind buses, notebooks destroyed, sheet music torn and pencils snapped. This continued for years. Misunderstood and enraged as a teenager, La Granada took her artistic angst to the streets as a graffiti artist, with only the moon as company.

One night, as she was snaking around fire escapes onto icy brick exteriors, mapping out a new mural in her mind, she was ambushed! Attacked by the same bullies in a drunken stupor who had threatened her all those years! But this time, La Granada was ready to exact her revenge. Dodging the law, rival artists and scaling fences had made her as strong and stealthy as ever. She dished out a butt kicking that the streets had never seen before, or since.

But she knew she knew she had to flee. Durham, NC is known around the world as a hub for creativity, and she knew she would be safe here. She is always masked, in case the demons from her childhood manage to find her.

Her signature has become a small grenade, to remind all who see that eventually, the silent and powerful ones in this world may explode and destroy us all, if someone is stupid enough to pull the pin.

LA VENGADORA de PLATA

There was once a young girl named Georgina from the village of Taxco in Mexico. Taxco produced the finest silver in Mexico and her family the most beautiful and sought after jewelry. Georgina had three sisters and a brother who helped their parents craft the beautiful jewelry Taxco was known for. Georgi, however, loved to be outside and every day walked for miles picking wild flowers, fruit, and herbs for her family and friends in Taxco.

One day, while Georgina was out picking fruit, a band of thieves came to Taxco to steal all of their silver. The thieves were marked with a tattoo on their face and threatened her family and neighbors with death if they did not turn over all their silver, money, and jewelry. When the villagers refused, the thieves began to burn the village down. When Georgina saw the smoke rising over the trees she rushed home to find her family trapped inside. She began kicking down the door and breaking windows but when she got inside, it was too late. Georgina held her family in her arms and wept. She stayed so long amidst the flames that she was severely burned.

Georgina vowed to stop the thieves responsible. She took up a luchadora mask and a new identity: La Vengadora de Plata. Traveling to faraway lands and surviving by fighting in matches, La Vengadora de Plata searches for the thieves responsible for her family’s suffering. La Vengadora de Plata fights for her family, for justice, and for revenge.

YES YES YES! LUCHADORAS 4 IS A GO!:

Durham’s original masked warriors are taking to the ring again. The luchadoras, an elite group of female lucha libre wrestlers have kicked, punched, and grappled their way into the hearts of the Triangle. This November 10 at NOON they’re bringing their biggest event yet to the Durham Armory.

Bear witness to 5 matches packed full of lucha fury as the heroic tecnicas face down the nastiest, most evil rudas ever to curse the squared circle. Kid Vega takes on La Vengadora de Plata while the Norweigian Nightmare and La Abandonada battle newcomers to the ring.

In the main event, Juicy Buns and The Scrambler trade blows in the inagural championship bout for the title of Grand Supreme Luchadoras Champion. Although two enter the ring, only one will leave with the Luchadoras’ coveted belt.

100% of the proceeds from this family-friendly event benefit the NC DREAM team and Poder Juvenil Campesino, organizations chosen for the strength of their work with North Carolina’s immigrant youth.

Captain Pancho’s Tacos will be on hand with the very best tacos, burritos and platters in the Triangle. A $13 advance ticket gets you lunch and a drink from Capt. Pancho’s, a Luchadoras sticker, and entrance to the event of a lifetime!

Juicy Buns had always been a good little dumpling. She was born in a Chirba Chirba steamer basket with with 10 other bun siblings. Juicy, however, was uglier than the rest with too little chirb to be a real Chirba dumpling. She was constantly teased for being dry and her siblings taunted her chanting “dry buns, dry buns!” until she couldn’t take it any more. The ugly dumpling hitched a ride on a big yellow truck, where she harnessed her chirb to master juicy bun bomb booty blasts and use her chirb for good. This November 10 at high noon at the Durham Armory, she fights her best friend turned sworn enemy, THE SCRAMBLER, for the title of SUPREME INTERGALACTIC LUCHADORAS CHAMPION.

THE NORWEGIAN NIGHTMARE

Abandoned in the snow one dark Norwegian winter night, the Nightmare was found by a clan of bears. They lovingly raised her as their own, and she had an idyllic childhood summering on the fjords, snoozing the winter away in her cozy cave, and noshing on the occasional shepherd (they taste like lutefisk.) One fateful night, while her adopted family was hibernating, her sister Brunhilde was stolen by a wicked carny to be sold as a circus bear. The Nightmare and her family were crushed, and she vowed to never rest until Brunhilde was found. Since then, the Nightmare has been traveling the world hunting down her bear sister. While searching in Mexico, she fell in love with lucha libre and started training as a luchadora in order to better avenge her sister. She also met the Scrambler in Mexico, and shortly thereafter, received an anonymous note stating that she could find her sister in Durham, NC. Coincidence? The Nightmare has traveled north to find her sister and seek her revenge. When not in the ring, she enjoys eating berries, sleeping late (til April, actually), and mauling unruly campers.

THE SCRAMBLER

The Scrambler was born in a science lab and raised by psychoanalysts in some unknown city. She read numbers off lab reports 12 hours a day for 20 years. The rest of her childhood was spent spinning in circles, pasting bits of newspaper in books Dada-style, and eating beans with a rusty spoon. When she finally escaped from the lab, the first person that The Scrambler met was a luchadora who became her mentor. The Scrambler always knew she had the luchadora spirit in her. She considers her Mind to be her most potent weapon, although she likes to drink Go-go juice before her matches to get pumped up (shhhh). She’s spent the last 6 months training with Chocolatito of Nicaragua as well as a group of powerful women who encouraged her to use her stealth and speed to defeat her foes. She will fight Juicy Buns in the title-winning match, which is sure to include Juicy Bomb Booty Blasts and The Scrambler’s signature move, The Vertigo.

KID VEGA

Hailing from Sevilla, Vega was born into an aristocratic family of legendary bullfighters. As the feisty only daughter, and youngest of her parents’s children, she grew up watching her brothers train to be matadors and too wanted to continue the noble family tradition. However, it was decided by her parents at an early age that Vega’s destiny was to marry one of the Spanish princes in an agreed marriage and live as a kept woman, through a deal done with the King. It was illegal for women to be bullfighters, under decree of the King; but being the headstrong girl she is, she began sneaking out to train in a masked disguise.

Her fiance followed her one night, thinking she was sneaking out to meet another lover… not knowing her other love was training to become a legendary bullfighter like her father and his before. He followed her to the empty bullring outside of town and watched as she met with a young, handsome matador - her teacher - and assuming him to be Vega’s romantic interest he immediately had him arrested for treason and Vega was chained up in the bull paddock under the royal bullring in the center of town while they figured out what to do with her. Every week, crowds of men would come by on the way to their seats in the stadium and throw rocks at her as she huddled in the darkness. Spending every moment of every day with the bulls bred for death, and hearing the cheers above her head whenever their blood was shed, sometimes feeling it drip onto her head from the grates above, lead her to feel a kinship to the bulls and desire to set herself, and them, free.

One night she seduced the King’s son into letting her out by pleading her love to him and promising to be a good wife. As she was released, she unlocked all the paddocks and the young prince was crushed in the stampede.

Now on the run from the royal family’s henchmen, she escaped to the Bull City to fight animals her own size. And she wears her mask still as protection in case one of the henchmen are lurking in the crowd…

Born into the rough world of Korean Infant Luchadora Fighting at the height of its popularity, the Seoul Crusher was thrown into the ring when she was mere days old, where she was defeated by another luchadora named the Infant Impaler. At such a young age, the loss was almost too much for her to bear, but she got back in the ring and began a winning streak that no other baby lucha had ever seen. When Crusher was just a month old, she tasted the sweetness that is revenge when she crushed the Infant Impaler in a cradle match for the ages.

With her rival defeated, Seoul Crusher was able to go about her life - free of worries and free of fighting - living with her former lucha partner Seoul Sista. But her time of leisure was short-lived; her life as an infant luchadora was catching up to her. She began to hear rumblings of threats against not only her honor, but her life. With no other option, she fled the country. At just three months old, a lovely all-American family took her in – completely unaware of her history. Although thousands of miles away from her homeland Korea, she feared entering into the wrestling circuit … until now. LA ABANDONADA

On the morning of her wedding day, a beautiful senorita awoke with a song in her heart. As she dressed and combed her hair, the name of her intended was like a kiss upon her lips. While she walked to the small chapel where she was to be wed, she skipped, laughed and smiled at passers-by.

But when she approached the church, the bride-to-be knew something was terribly wrong. The heavy wooden doors were barred and chained and her fiancé was nowhere in sight.

Letting out a mighty yell, she fell to her knees, clutching her bridal bouquet. An unanswerable anger welled up in her as a shadow – a dark storm cloud – was cast over her heart.

Then in the distance she heard the sound of a scuffle. There were shouts and the intoxicating melody of flesh hitting canvas. She followed the sound and found two wrestlers facing off amid a crowd of cheering villagers. Without thinking, she pulled her bridal veil over her face to hide her tears and pushed her way into the ring.

After she laid waste to the fighters in the ring, and more than a few members of the crowd, the referee asked, “Who are you? Why do you fight?” She replied, simply, “I am La Abandonada. And I am the enemy of love.”

Hardened by too many Midwestern winters and embittered at society’s unwillingness to embrace the vulnerable, the Honey Badger adopted this new identity because it is the most fearless animal in all of the animal kingdom. She left the cold behind and wandered aimlessly in search of an outlet for her rage, until she discovered the Luchadoras. Now she channels her nastiness into good by fighting for justice for victims of violence and discrimination.

QUEEN COBRA/LA REINA COBRA

Queen Cobra was born on the border and worked the rodeo circuit in Northern Mexico and the Southwestern U.S. for several years, until a snake spooked her horse and she took a bad fall. After several days in a coma, she regained consciousness and learned why the snake was so upset: somebody was trying to build an ugly wall in its beautiful desert habitat! Her career as a stunt rider over, Queen Cobra assumed her new identity and left the rodeo ring for the lucha ring. This wrestler keeps a low profile but packs a venomous punch when provoked. She fights in honor of those who struggle against divisions between people everywhere.

La Reina Cobra nació cerca de la frontera y concursaba en las charreadas del Norte de México y el Sudoeste de los Estados Unidos por muchos años hasta que sufrió una caída grave cuando una víbora espantó a su caballo. Después de varios días en coma, ella volvió en sí y aprendió la razón por la cuál estaba tan agitada la víbora: ¡alguien estaba construyendo un muro feo en su hogar desértico tan bonito! Su carrera como charra había terminado, y la Reina Cobra adoptó una identidad nueva y se trasladó del ruedo al cuadrilátero de la lucha libre. Esta luchadora mantiene un perfil bajo, pero sus puñetazos son venenosos y siempre se levanta después de caerse. La Sirenita de Tijuana nació con el destino de luchar. Siempre vivió mirando desde afuera hacia adentro a todos los problemas sociales, las discriminaciones, la violencia y la falta de respeto. Todo ésto le afecto directamente y decidió sacar sus frustraciones en el ring. Ella es amada por todos porque no lucha por fama ni dinero sino en honor de todos quienes pelean para sus básicos derechos.

Este 25 de febrero luchará sola contra La Reina Cobra. ¡Ven a apoyarla!
